Wireless surround sound
Surround sound means that the sound is tuned into the human ear’s 3D way of hearing, rather than just from a right or left speaker, which is usual for in front of a computer, (2D). Surround sound speaker systems usually have a few different speakers located around your room, and can really enhance a gaming, sound or cinema experience. You will need an amplifier with the system. So, if you watch DVDs on your monitor, or a heavy gamer, then this could be really good. You can often use them with video games consoles or gaming consoles like Playstation or the Xbox. Surround sound systems come with an amplifier, and four speakers, two rear ones that go to the back of the room and two that are to the front, left and right, a subwoofer, which can be located anywhere and a centre speaker, which is usually placed centrally on or below the monitor / screen. This will come with lots of cable to be laid around the room between the computer or TV and the speaker.
You could minimise the effect of the cables with products such as Taperwire Invisible Speaker Cable which is a very flat cable, that you can mount onto skirting or right at the edge of the carpet. There is no such thing as a truly wireless surround sound system, as each of the speakers needs a power supply of some description, and there has to be transmitters which themselves are powered. Wireless here means less wires but work best when the amplifier transmits to the rear speakers, so no cables are laid between the front and the back of the room. Here, you still need to set up the transmitter at the front of the room, which transmits to a receiver at the back of the room, which connects by wires and power to the rear speakers. If the connectivity is not great, then it is just not worth buying a “wireless” system.
You don’t want to compromise the sound of your speakers. Some of the cheaper systems will need to the speakers located fairly near the transmitters, or they don’t work, so take the trouble to do price comparisons, read reviews for the ones you are looking for and investigate what they really mean by being wireless speakers.
